Quick answer

The eternal God is His people's refuge, and underneath them are His everlasting arms; He drives out their enemies. God Himself is the security and strength of Israel.

Overview

This beloved verse declares God a "dwelling place" and supports His people with "everlasting arms," then promises victory as He thrusts out the enemy. It assures believers that the eternal God Himself, not their own power, upholds and protects them. The image of being held by everlasting arms is a precious comfort, fulfilled in Christ from whose hand none can pluck His people (John 10:28-29).

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
