Quick answer

Moses rebukes the people for repaying God so foolishly when He is their father who bought, made, and established them. It matters because ingratitude toward our Creator and Redeemer is profound folly.

Overview

God is portrayed as a father who fashioned and redeemed His people, making their unfaithfulness deeply unnatural. The language of being 'bought' anticipates the theme of redemption that runs through Scripture. This appeal to God's fatherly creation and redemption foreshadows the gospel, where God redeems His people through Christ and adopts them as His own children.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
