Quick answer

Vengeance and recompense belong to God, to be repaid in His appointed time of calamity. It matters because it establishes that justice is God's prerogative, not ours.

Overview

God claims the right to judge, assuring that the wicked will not escape and that timing is His. This verse is quoted in Romans 12:19 and Hebrews 10:30 to ground both restraint from personal revenge and reverence before God's judgment. Knowing that vengeance is God's frees believers to entrust wrongs to Him, who judged sin fully at the cross.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
