Quick answer
Israel is to remember the unprovoked attack of Amalek during the exodus. The memory of that wickedness must not fade.
Overview
Amalek assaulted Israel soon after the deliverance from Egypt (Exodus 17:8-16), and God commands lasting remembrance of this hostility. The call to remember frames the judgment announced in the following verses. It teaches that opposition to God's redeemed people is opposition to God Himself, who pledges to deal with His enemies.
