Quick answer

The victim of rape is wholly innocent and bears no guilt; her case is likened to a murder victim. Coerced victims are protected, not condemned.

Overview

The law explicitly clears the assaulted woman of any sin worthy of death, comparing the assault to a violent attack and murder. This is a remarkable affirmation of the victim's innocence and the recognition of rape as a grave crime against her. It displays God's tender justice toward the oppressed and His insistence that guilt rest only where it belongs.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
