Quick answer

If anyone in Israel did evil by transgressing God's covenant through idolatry, it was to be addressed. Covenant unfaithfulness was a grave communal matter.

Overview

This opens a case law concerning idolatry, the most serious breach of Israel's covenant with God. The covenant was like a marriage bond, and turning to other gods was spiritual treachery. Such seriousness about exclusive loyalty to God shapes the believer's call to wholehearted devotion to the Lord who has redeemed us.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
