Quick answer

Israel is a holy people, chosen by God as his treasured possession above all nations. Their distinctive conduct flows from their special calling.

Overview

Moses grounds the prohibition on pagan practices in Israel's identity as a holy people whom God chose as his own treasured possession. Election to belong to God is the basis for a life set apart. The New Testament applies this very language to the church, the people God has made his own through Christ to declare his praises.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
