Quick answer

God's mercy comes as Israel obeys his voice and does what is right in his eyes. Blessing follows wholehearted obedience to the Lord.

Overview

Moses ties the promised mercy and multiplication to Israel's faithful obedience to all God's commands. Doing what is right in the LORD's eyes is the path along which his blessing flows. This anticipates the gospel truth that perfect obedience and lasting blessing are secured for God's people in Christ, the truly obedient Son.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
