Quick answer

Once Israel crosses the Jordan and God grants rest from enemies in safety, settled worship can begin. God's gift of security undergirds their obedient worship.

Overview

The conditions for the centralized worship Moses describes are entry into the land, inheritance, and rest from surrounding enemies. This rest is God's gift, not Israel's achievement, securing them to worship without fear. It points forward to the greater rest and security believers have in Christ, who has conquered every enemy on their behalf.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).

How Deuteronomy 12:10 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
