Quick answer

The king summons Babylon's wise men, offering high honors to anyone who can read and interpret the writing. Human wisdom is called upon but will prove unable to meet the moment.

Overview

Belshazzar turns to his enchanters and astrologers, promising royal purple, a gold chain, and the rank of third ruler. As earlier in Daniel, the kingdom's experts are paraded out only to fail, exposing the emptiness of pagan wisdom before the revelation of God. The episode prepares the way for the one man through whom God's word will be made known.

Christ at the center

Daniel sees the stone cut without hands that shatters the kingdoms, and 'one like a son of man' given everlasting dominion — titles and visions Jesus claims as his own.
