The phrase 'I will pass through' deliberately echoes the Exodus Passover, but here Israel is on the receiving end of judgment rather than being spared. Their covenant privilege does not exempt them when they persist in sin. This warns that mere external belonging to God's people is no shelter; only those covered by the true Passover Lamb, Christ, are safe when God passes through.
