Quick answer

A sudden earthquake shook the prison's foundations, opening every door and loosing every chain.

Overview

God answered their praise with a dramatic display of power, though notably none of the prisoners fled. The loosed chains and opened doors picture the liberating power of the God who hears His servants. What looked like total defeat becomes the setting for deliverance, both physical and, for the jailer, spiritual.

Christ at the center

Acts is the risen Christ continuing his work by the Spirit through the church, as the apostles preach that there is salvation in no other name under heaven.

How Acts 16:26 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
