Quick answer

Though people abandoned him, the Lord stood with Paul and strengthened him so the gospel could be fully proclaimed to the Gentiles. Christ's faithful presence sustains his servants when human help fails.

Overview

In stark contrast to the deserters of verse 16, the risen Lord stood by Paul and empowered him, turning even a trial into an occasion for the message to be heard. Paul's purpose was always that 'all the Gentiles might hear,' and being 'delivered out of the mouth of the lion' likely pictures rescue from immediate destruction, with possible echoes of Psalm 22:21 and Daniel 6. The verse magnifies God's faithfulness: when everyone else departs, Christ remains and accomplishes his mission through his servant. Paul's deliverance serves the gospel, not merely his own safety.
