Quick answer

When the lawless one finally appears, the Lord Jesus will destroy him simply by the breath of his mouth and the splendor of his coming. Christ's return effortlessly overcomes the worst evil.

Overview

Drawing on Isaiah 11:4, Paul pictures the Messiah slaying the wicked with a mere word, showing that the most fearsome opponent is no contest for Christ. The "manifestation of his coming" makes the man of sin's defeat coincide with the second coming. The verse gives persecuted believers great comfort: however dreadful evil becomes, Jesus' victory is certain and easy.
