Quick answer

Joash strips the temple and palace treasuries of dedicated gold and sends it to Hazael to buy him off. The threat is averted at great cost.

Overview

Rather than seeking deliverance from the Lord, Joash gives away the sacred treasures of generations to appease the Syrian king. The tribute spares Jerusalem but depletes what was dedicated to God. This pragmatic but spiritually compromised choice shows a faith that wavered, especially after Jehoiada's influence waned, reminding us that true security is found in God alone.
