Quick answer

Believers groan under the burdens of mortal life, longing not merely to die but to be transformed so life swallows up mortality. The desire is for resurrection, not just escape from the body.

Overview

Paul clarifies that the groaning is not a wish to be 'unclothed' (bodiless) but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal is swallowed up by life. This affirms the goodness of embodied existence and the hope of resurrection rather than mere escape from the body. It echoes the triumph over death promised in 1 Corinthians 15:54.
