Quick answer

God comforts believers in their troubles so that they, in turn, can comfort others with the same comfort they received. Suffering is not wasted but equips us for ministry.

Overview

Divine comfort has a purpose that flows outward: those consoled by God become channels of consolation to fellow sufferers. Paul presents a pattern in which affliction and comfort are passed along within the body of Christ. This reflects the gospel logic that what we receive by grace we steward for others, sharing in Christ's own ministry of compassion.

Christ at the center

In Christ all God's promises are 'Yes and Amen'; though rich, he became poor to make us rich, and in him God reconciles the world, making us new creations.
