Quick answer
By trying to stop the gospel going to the Gentiles, opponents heaped up their guilt, and judgment was overtaking them. Resisting God's saving plan brings serious consequences.
Overview
Paul notes that hindering the gospel's spread to the nations only filled up the measure of sin, and wrath was coming upon those who did so. This reflects the seriousness of opposing God's purpose to save the world through Christ. Yet Paul elsewhere holds out hope for his kinsmen's salvation, so the verse warns against gospel resistance without closing the door of mercy.
