Quick answer

Believers have an anointing from the Holy One and so possess true knowledge. The Spirit equips them to discern the truth.

Overview

In contrast to the deceivers, John's readers have an 'anointing', the Holy Spirit, given by Christ the Holy One. Through this anointing they know the truth and can recognize error. This empowering by the Spirit guards the church against the false teaching threatening it.
