Quick answer

One who speaks in a tongue speaks to God, not to people, since no one understands. Uninterpreted tongues remain mysteries to the hearers.

Overview

Paul explains why prophecy is preferable to uninterpreted tongues in the assembly. Speaking in a tongue without interpretation addresses God privately but conveys nothing to the congregation. The issue is intelligibility: gifts in church gatherings should communicate truth so that others may understand and be edified.
