Quick answer

If you bless God only in the spirit, the uninstructed cannot say 'Amen,' not knowing what you said. Others cannot join what they do not understand.

Overview

Paul argues from the congregation's response. Thanksgiving in an unknown tongue prevents the ordinary hearer from affirming it with the 'Amen.' Corporate worship is meant to be shared, so intelligibility allows the whole body to participate together in praising God, not merely to listen as outsiders.
