Quick answer

Paul warns the Corinthians by recalling that all Israel's forefathers were under the cloud and passed through the Red Sea. Past privileges did not guarantee their faithfulness or safety.

Overview

Turning to Israel's exodus, Paul stresses that "all" the fathers shared in God's gracious wonders—the guiding cloud and the parted sea (Exod 13-14). He sets up a sobering lesson: even people richly blessed by God can fall. This directly applies his preceding self-discipline theme (9:27), cautioning the overconfident Corinthians that participation in spiritual privileges is no substitute for persevering faith and obedience.
