Quick answer

Saul died for his unfaithfulness: disobeying the Lord and consulting a medium. It gives God's verdict on why Saul fell.

Overview

The Chronicler concludes that Saul died because of his trespass against Yahweh, breaking His word and seeking a medium rather than the Lord. This theological summary interprets the whole tragedy as divine judgment on persistent disobedience. It warns the restored community that faithfulness to God is the path of life, and it heightens the longing for a faithful king, fulfilled in David's greater Son, Jesus Christ.
