Limitless Word

Truthfulness

Quick answer

God cannot lie; "God is not man, that he should lie." His word is utterly reliable.

Overview

God's truthfulness means he cannot lie and his word is utterly reliable. "God is not man, that he should lie" (Num 23:19); "it is impossible for God to lie" (Heb 6:18). He is the source and standard of all truth, and reality itself is trustworthy because its Author is.

This matters for faith at the deepest level: faith is not believing without reason but trusting a Person who has proven truthful. When God makes a promise, the only question is whether he is able and faithful to keep it — and Scripture answers both with a yes. In a world full of spin, propaganda, and broken promises, here is one whose word never fails: "the grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever" (Isa 40:8).

Where it appears

  • Numbers 23:19

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor the son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it good?
