Living Water

Quick answer

Jesus called the Spirit "living water" — the inner spring of eternal life that he gives to all who come to him thirsty.

Overview

On the last day of the feast Jesus cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink... Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water" — and John adds, "this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive" (John 7:37-39). The image runs from Eden's river to the woman at the well (John 4:10-14) to the river of life in Revelation 22. The Holy Spirit is the living water who satisfies the soul's deepest thirst and wells up to eternal life.
