Righteousness
God always does what is right; "righteous is the LORD in all his ways."
Overview
God's righteousness is his unwavering rightness — he always acts in perfect accord with his own good character. "Righteous is the LORD in all his ways" (Ps 145:17). It is closely tied to his justice but broader: not only does he judge rightly, he is right, the living standard of goodness itself.
The gospel's great surprise is that God's righteousness becomes a gift. The same righteousness that condemns sin is "the righteousness of God... through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe" (Rom 3:22). In Christ, the believer is not merely let off but credited with a righteousness not their own — "the righteousness of God" (2 Cor 5:21). God's perfect rightness, which we could never achieve, is given to us. For a conscience that knows it falls short, this is everything.
