Redemption
Quick answer
Redemption is being bought back and set free — God paying the price to release his people from slavery to sin and death.
Overview
The word comes from the marketplace and the rescue of slaves and captives. God "redeemed" Israel out of Egypt; a kinsman-redeemer like Boaz bought back the destitute. The New Testament uses the same image for the cross: we were "ransomed... with the precious blood of Christ." Redemption stresses both the bondage we were in and the costly love that freed us — we are not merely forgiven but purchased and owned by God.
