Adoption
Quick answer
Adoption is God making believers his own children — bringing rebels and strangers into his family with full rights as heirs.
Overview
Salvation is not only a verdict (justification) but a relationship: "to all who received him... he gave the right to become children of God." Through Christ, God adopts former enemies as sons and daughters, gives them his Spirit by whom they cry "Abba, Father," and makes them "heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ." Adoption is perhaps the highest privilege of the gospel — not merely forgiven servants but beloved children.
