Quick answer

The Tent of Meeting, carried by the Levites, traveled in the very center of the camp. God's presence was the heart and ordering principle of all Israel's movement.

Overview

As Israel marched, the Levites and the tabernacle occupied the middle position, with the tribes arranged around them in fixed order. This pictured the truth that God dwelt in the midst of His people, both protected by them and protecting them. It anticipates the gospel reality that God's chief desire is to dwell among His people, fulfilled when the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us (John 1:14).

Christ at the center

In the wilderness Christ is the water from the rock, the bronze serpent lifted up that the dying might look and live (John 3:14), and the star and scepter that Balaam saw rising out of Jacob.
