The Genealogy and Birth of Jesus

Matthew 1–2

Matthew roots Jesus in Abraham and David, then narrates his virgin birth as Immanuel, "God with us."

Matthew opens with a genealogy that is really a theological argument: Jesus is the son of David (the promised king) and the son of Abraham (through whom the nations are blessed). The unexpected women and the fourteen-fourteen-fourteen structure announce that God works through messy history. The birth narrative reads it all as fulfillment — Immanuel, "God with us."
