Quick answer

Anyone who does not humble himself on that day will be cut off from his people.

Overview

Refusing to observe the day in repentance brought the severe penalty of being cut off from the covenant community. Atonement was not optional; to spurn it was to spurn God's provided way of mercy. This warns that there is no standing with God for those who reject His appointed means of atonement, ultimately found in Christ (Hebrews 10:26-29).

Christ at the center

Every sacrifice, every priest, and every day of atonement points beyond itself to the one perfect offering and the great High Priest who, by his own blood, makes the unclean holy once for all.

How Leviticus 23:29 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
