Quick answer

They give the priests Kiriath Arba, that is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with its surrounding pasturelands. A major city of refuge becomes a priestly town.

Overview

Hebron, ancient and prominent, was both a city of refuge and now a Levitical city for Aaron's sons. Its rich history reaches back to Abraham, and it had been Caleb's reward for faithful service. That a city of refuge was also a priestly city beautifully joins the themes of mercy and mediation, both of which find their consummation in Christ.

Christ at the center

Joshua — the same name as Jesus, 'the LORD saves' — leads God's people into their inheritance, a shadow of the greater Joshua who brings us into the true rest and the promised land that remains.

How Joshua 21:11 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
