Quick answer

God will set a sign among the nations and send survivors to distant peoples to declare his glory. It matters because it foretells a worldwide mission proclaiming God to those who have never heard.

Overview

The LORD promises to send messengers to far-off lands that have not known his fame, so that his glory is declared among the nations. This missionary vision anticipates the spread of the gospel to the ends of the earth. It finds fulfillment in Christ's commission to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19; Acts 1:8).

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 66:19 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
