Quick answer

God promised the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession and to be their God. Both land and relationship are pledged forever.

Overview

God reaffirms the gift of Canaan to Abraham's descendants as a perpetual inheritance, joined to the promise of God's own presence among them. The earthly land foreshadows the greater inheritance of God's people. The New Testament expands this to the renewed creation, the everlasting home secured for all who belong to Christ.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
